The Sisters, Faithful Companions of Jesus, arrived at Richmond, in Melbourne
in 1882, at the invitation of the Jesuits. It was in Richmond that the
Sisters opened their first school. Originally called Mount St Joseph's,
the school later became known as Vaucluse College after the street in
which it was situated.
Initially providing education for the girls and young women of Richmond,
the College later welcomed girls from many different countries and a
wide range of suburbs. It was truly multicultural and ecumenical in
its student body.
As the numbers of families living in Richmond declined so did the number
of students. It was on 8 December 2000 that Vaucluse College, after
contributing significantly to Catholic education in Melbourne for over
118 years, closed it doors for the last time. It left behind many loyal
past pupils who wish to remain in contact with the FCJ Sisters and with
other past pupils.
